Show#227 Bill Sent To Obama By Menendez, Smith Autism Bill!

Monday night at 8pm, be sure to tune in for our newest episode of Hope Saves the Day on Autism Radio Tonight's Show is with Host Paul Cimins talk about a bill to fund autism research and help young autistic people as they move into adulthood has cleared both chambers of Congress with backing from New Jersey’s U.S. Rep. Chris Smith and Sen. Robert Menendez.

The bill passed the Senate by unanimous consent late Thursday after clearing the House by a voice vote in late June. In parts of New Jersey, 1 in 45 children have been identified with autism, most among areas studied in 11 states, according to a March report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The overall rate among 8-year-olds living in the communities studied was 1 in 68.

“By passing this legislation, Congress assures individuals with autism and their families that they will not be left behind, and that we are working to assist and empower them,” Smith, a Republican, said in a news release.

Smith sponsored the bill, which incorporated language Menendez proposed in the Senate, according to Menendez’s office.

The bill “ensures these vital autism programs are reauthorized and continue providing research, services and supports individuals with autism and their families have come to rely on,” Menendez, a Democrat, said in a news release.

The bill now goes to President Obama for his signature.

It would authorize $1.3 billion of federal funding over five years for autism research. It also directs federal agencies to develop plans for autistic children who “age out” school-based support programs and move toward adulthood.

Smith said 50,000 young people with autism enter adulthood every year and join “communities that are unprepared to meet their support needs.

Show#226 Talking About Disney Films Can Help Children with Autism

Disney’s effect on children isn’t that hard to miss.

Some will remember Owen Suskind, the young boy with autism who learned to speak and interact after watching Disney movies. His history with Disney, which was chronicled in a piece by his father for The New York Times, started when he heard characters speak in the movies. His father then took on the identity of the characters and spoke to Owen in their voices.

Owen talked back, something he hadn’t done in years, The Times reported.

“I’m an evil parrot talking to a Disney villain, and he’s talking back,” Ron wrote. “Then, I hear a laugh, a joyful little laugh that I have not heard in many years.”

Owen is just one example of how Disney has helped those with autism. With 1 in 50 children being diagnosed with autism, according to the CDC, and Disney movies being widely popular among kids, in what ways can those with autistic characteristics benefit from Disney, its characters and its entire brand.

Show#225 Talks About Willow Hope's Project Asperclick and Many Other Things She is Doing For Autism!!!!

 On Monday night at 8pm, be sure to tune in for our newest episode of Hope Saves the Day on Autism Radio.Tonight's Paul Cimins Discusses the Journey and Work of Willow hope and the impact she is making on the Autism Community.

Our Story is about the work of WillowHope she is a  22 year old female with Asperger Syndrome.

  She tries to do as much as possible to raise awareness and acceptance of the Autistic Spectrum. It started with a video blog, something which I continue to do, it includes various projects including a forum for people on the spectrum (Asperclick) and it includes writing (among other things). The thing I'm most proud of though, is my book. I genuinely believe that it could help a lot of people, and not in a patronizing way, because that's just not my style, but in the same way that my videos have helped people - hopefully to a much greater extent (the feedback so far has been amazing). 

I didn't just want to write walls of text, because I know that can be unhelpful for some people on the spectrum, and it’s not always the best way to be relatable. To break it up, I wanted to have a space for photos and videos, so I decided to make an interactive timeline, something which I feel is a new approach to sharing a story about living on the spectrum. It was a huge job and a draining process, so I hope that it will be helpful for people and that it enhances the book. 

Included are lots of photos from my childhood, right up to present day, which go some way to illustrate the book. Also, I've put in lots of information which just didn't fit in with the chapters as they are, but either follows on or fits right alongside them and I felt I shouldn’t leave out completely. I've basically opened up and pieced together my whole life, the good and the bad parts, and that's why it's been so hard to do. I also decided to upload all of the reports and letters from various psychiatrists and therapists, which includes my diagnosis' and any trouble I had with school etc. which I was unsure about since it’s so personal, but I think it’s important.

Show#223 Autistic traits seen in parents of kids with autism

Monday night at 8pm, be sure to tune in for our newest episode of Hope Saves the Day on Autism Radio Tonight's Show is with Host Paul Cimins talks about a Study by Dr Constantino, director of the William Greenleaf Eliot Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Washington University and psychiatrist-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, said the traits related to autism tend to be natural variations in social skills.

Studying children with autism and their parents, researchers have found that when a child has autism, his or her parents are more likely to have autistic traits than parents who don’t have a child with an autism spectrum disorder, as measured by a survey used to identify such characteristics.

 Past studies have found that the siblings of children with autism also tended to have more autistic traits than the siblings of kids without autism. But this study is the first to connect significant numbers of autistic traits in parents to diagnoses of autism in their children.
