Show#221 Interview With Victoria Marin Founder of Online Adirondack Learning Academy

Monday night at 8pm, be sure to tune in for our newest episode of Hope Saves the Day on Autism Radio Tonight's Show is with Host Paul Cimins sits down with Victoria Marin Founder of Online Learning Academy Adirondack Center.

About Our Guests Victoria Marin is not only a teacher and cofounder of Adirondack Learning Academy; an online homeschool which provides comprehensive, individualized programs of study to suit all students and learning styles - she is also a single mother of five children. Victoria knows all too well the challenges a parent faces with a child within the Autism spectrum; as her own son was having great difficulties in the public school system. With the new data just released indicating Autism is more prevalent than once thought, schools are being challenged to provide increased services for a growing number of children. Upon experiencing several concerns regarding her son’s education within the public school system, Victoria was faced with making a difficult decision. Despite his IEP (Individualized Education Plan), his educational needs were not being met. Direct instruction within the classroom was lackluster. His behaviors were not being properly assessed and opportunities for learning within his environment were not being provided. A trial period in a self-contained classroom led to regression. Despite the public school’s "zero tolerance" policy, bullying also became an issue. While Victoria felt she did not have the confidence to believe she could effectively educate him at home given his diagnosis on the Autism spectrum, she knew she had to take action.

As a parent who knows her child best, she knew the first changes to make were within his working environment. Lighting, noise, colors within the room and external stimulation were factors which needed to be controlled for optimal performance. In a traditional classroom with an average of 20-30 students, it is understandable that such changes could not be easily accommodated. In addition, his teacher was not properly trained in teaching a child on the Autism spectrum; therefore, she became frustrated as well. Along with changes within his environment came modifications to assignments and lessons. Victoria found that working with flash cards for learning multiplication tables was more effective than asking him to write the tables.

With her hands-on knowledge along with being a teacher and Occupational Therapist, Victoria launched Adirondack Learning Academy for the sole purpose of helping children to enjoy learning, to feel safe and to build their confidence in preparation for their bright future in this world.

Show#220 Discussing How Important Sleep Is and Its Effects On Children With Autism!!!

Monday night at 8pm, be sure to tune in for our newest episode of Hope Saves the Day on Autism Radio Tonight's Show is with Host Paul Cimins who Talks about how Sleep plays a critical role in our health. Not getting enough sleep can impair cognition and make it difficult to concentrate. Research has also shown that individuals with chronic sleep loss are at higher risk of long-term health consequences including heart disease and diabetes.

This presents numerous challenges for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Researchers estimate that sleep disorders affect between 40% to 80% of children with ASD. The most common problems are difficulty falling asleep and waking frequently. One longitudinal study has shown that sleep deprivation had a drastic impact on social functioning and behaviour.

We also Talk About a New App called SpeechMatch, people with autism can listen to and see the sound waves of a number of different phrases, each uttered with a different emotion. They try to match their own voice to one of these phrases, using the same type of emotion. Their voice will also show up as a sound wave, and they can see how closely their wave fits with the original, and get a numerical score for how closely they matched that emotion.

Keene State College psychology professor Lawrence Welkowitz and his latest advancement is an iPad app designed to show what speech looks like visually, represented by sound waves.

That, he says, can help people with autism see and match how emotions are conveyed in their speech.

Autism spectrum disorders affect a child’s brain development. People with autism have difficulty interacting socially and communicating with others to varying degrees.

He says that many People with autism “don’t play that social game,”

Show#216 Interview with Director of Too Sane For This World William Davenport

Monday night at 8pm, be sure to tune in for our newest episode of Hope Saves the Day on Autism Radio Tonight's Show is with Host Paul Cimins Who sits down with William Davenport.

About The Director :William Davenport is a director and actor, known for Citizen Autistic (2013), Too Sane for This World (2011) and A Mother's Prayer (2009).

The film features twelve people, some with Aspergers and others considered "high-functioning," such as Temple Grandin (author and professor), Robyn Steward (a musician and mentor for others on the spectrum), Greg Yates (studied biophysics and psychology at U.C. Berkeley and MIT respectively) and Rudy Simone, who has written four best-selling books on Aspergers. The film was an official selection at the Hawaii International Film Festival and an honorable mention that the SAMHSA Voice Awards in 2012, also features other adults who are perhaps less high-functioning but are still working hard to find a meaningful place in our society. In the film, Steward suggests, "No matter what somebody’s disability is, they have a great number of things to offer to the world. It’s just a matter of being able to see those things and work around them. Because even the most able-bodied person has difficulties if you think about it."

Too Sane for This World explores the challenges, gifts, and distinct perspectives of 12 adults on the autism spectrum. Featuring an introduction by bestselling author, Dr. Temple Grandin, and interviews designed by adults with high-functioning autism, the film discusses many of the problems facing the autism community – from bullying to marginalization and discrimination. A unique collaboration between neurotypical and atypical individuals, men and women living on the spectrum speak candidly about defining and coming to terms with their autism, difficulties they’ve faced, and the experiences that have shaped their lives, illustrating the neurodiversity of the mind and its limitless potential.
